Nenaghgal visits Castle Arch Pottery at Kilkenny Design Centre - "Love Irish Crafts" Continues....

Today I wanted to continue my "Love Irish Crafts" blog campaign with the beautiful pottery at Castle Arch. Started by Corkonian Ray Power in 1993, Castle Arch Pottery is set up right in the Castle Yard in the Kilkenny Design Centre just across the street from Kilkenny Castle.

I was able to stop in and visit Ray last Thursday but had also met him at Showcase back in January. Always good to see things first hand -something I always strive to do although not always possible- and I was not disappointed.

Rays pieces are made in small production batches on the wheel. This gives him the flexibility to pay attention to the design detail so he can add handles, sprigs and other decorative touches unique to his work. These shots above show some of his newest introductions in pale colours. I particularly love these but he also has a range in darker blues and greens that are equally appealing.

A range of plant pots on display outside the studio.

These planters for external walls really caught my eye.

An overview of his range in the showroom at the pottery in Castle Yard.

Ray works right here where the public can view the production process. Shelves have pieces waiting to go into the kiln.

I loved seeing these in their pre-fired state - you can really see the detail he adds.

These are the wall planters lined up before firing.

This strong contrast of deep blues and greens is wonderful.

You can find Castle Arch on Facebook or go to their website. Don't forget Kilkenny Arts Festival kicks off on Friday so be sure to put Castle Arch on your places to visit!
