Magical Snow and Ice Images

I just had to share with you the amazing images my mother sent through to me of their house in Connecticut - I know everyone back on the East Coast (of the US) is pretty darn sick of the plethora of snow storms that have been rolling through this year but for those of us on this side of the Atlantic - where traffic grinds to a halt with a millimeter of snow on the ground.....just thought you should all see what it's like over there.
These are shots from outside my old childhood bedroom window - long icicles descending down from the gutters outside.

This the view of of my brother's childhood bedroom - look how deep it is. This is just after the latest storm so the driveway hasn't even been plowed yet.

This is from their sitting room window - out onto the outdoor seating area/picnic table where we have all our meals in the summer - you almost can't see the chairs.

Here's their cat Rumble - sitting under the bird feeder in the back of the house - a special path had to be dug to the feeder just to get seed onto it.

Some lovely shots in my old bedroom in a bright wintry light - this is on the mantelpiece.

On the left, my old Steiff bear - now some 40 plus years old with a younger bunny friend.

And finally Mr. Rumble - cosy inside on the radiator.
Thanks to my mum - Jilly Walsh of Jilly's Jubilee - for providing me with these wonderful images. Part of me wishes I was there yet part of me is glad that spring is almost on it's way here in Ireland.

Community Spirit - Have You Got It?

Last night I was reading my favourite magazine - UK Country Living - I get loads of inspiration from this magazine because not only does it feature fabulous products and talented creative people but it has a wonderful mission to encourage people to be pro-active about changing their world.
Last year they did a campaign called Your Countryside Needs You - which encouraged their readers to buy products from the British countryside.
This year, they are asking their readers to "play a part in your community and help where you live thrive."
It's easy to complain that we don't have the time or the energy but giving back feels good and the results can be amazing. Like many of us I have a full time job - my evenings are full with researching and writing posts for this blog - I'm also secretary for the Parent Teacher Association at my daughter's school which works on essential fundrasing throughout the year - I volunteer my efforts for canvasing for the Labour party as my brother in law is a Councillor in Nenagh and it's become quite the family affair- I also attend community events and networking breakfasts and believe me I'd love to do more. I used to be on the Tidy Towns Committee as well here in Nenagh and would love to try and work it back into my schedule.
The thing is - we all have extra time to give (even if we think we don't - I mean come on, arent' we all guilty of spending just a few too many hours vegged out on the couch?) and we should be teaching our children about this at an early age as this kind of enthusiasm and spirit will carry us through the recession and get us back to grass roots - working together for a mutually beneficial cause.
Am I too hopeful? Well, maybe so but I have incredible faith in people and I'd like to see people stand up and do something significant to make a change to the world around them. No more bitching and moaning - we have to get on with life - survive the recession and rise above the shortfallings of our government.
For more ideas, pick up the February 2011 issue of Country Living - give yourself a little inspiration.

Showcase at the RDS- Irish Creativity at its Best

Yesterday I spent the day up in Dublin attending Showcase 2011, Ireland's Creative Expo at the RDS. This is a trade show where retailers from around the world come to buy for their shops and members of the press, like myself, can attend to suss out the trends and see all that's new. As you know, on 1 February I'll be launching my "Love Irish Crafts" blog campaign so this was the place to be to meet these creative craftspeople.

Here in the centre of the hall is Creative Island - which featured 75 different Irish craft makers and designers. They were specially selected for the quality of their new and innovative products - that are "Imagined, Designed and Made in Ireland". All throughout the show - you saw this great logo in the booths of designers that did just that.

As part of my campaign I'll be highlighting a huge range of creative people over the next year - at least one per week but I'd say I'll be able to do much more than that!

If yesterday taught me anything - their is a great entrepreneurial spirit in Ireland right now despite the political situation. People are so creative - they are passionate about their products and they are thinking outside of the box and figuring out creative ways to get the word out about their product.

Ireland has a lot to be proud about and this creativity stimulates tremendous exporting outside of the country which brings in millions of euros each year.

Mary Kennedy from Nationwide was working her way through the show and her program will air tonight about what she saw at the show. Be sure to tune into that to give you a glimpse of what is on offer and certainly keep your eyes open for any features in the papers.

I have an endless list of ideas of people and products to feature on my blog in the upcoming weeks and of course throughout the year.

Do send me ideas -I wasn't able to visit everyone at the show in one day but I'm contacting them via email as well but if there is someone who lives near you that you'd like to recommend or if you are a crafts person yourself - don't' be shy!

Colorful Graphics from Marram Studio

I'm heading off to Dublin this morning to attend Showcase at the RDS. I'm really looking forward to my day, even though it will be a long one - thank goodness the new stretch of motorway has opened between Nenagh and Borris n Ossory - it will make a huge difference.
Oh - and before I forget - Nenaghgal is now on Facebook so do go and "LIKE" me - here's the link and I'll get a proper FB button up on my blog soon.
Another great business I found over in Glasgow - Marram Studio - started by Sarah Johnston back in 2004 under the name Digitata and then she re-branded and now it has a catchy new name. Marram grass is a type of grass that grows on the sea shore in Orkney near to where she lives and it is one of her many sources of inspiration.
Above are her linen tea towels - they are so graphic and quirky - ideal for an all white kitchen.

Her poppy cushion.
A darling little purse.
A striking black and white linen cushion.
A delicate fern design printed onto linen.
Here her poppy design has been used for a leather hand bag.

This was her stand at the Country Living Fair. It gives you a real feel for the range of products she has now developed. I love the colours don't you?
All images from Marram Studio - check her out online.

Dee Puddy Garden and Interiors

I discovered this delightful British website recently - Dee Puddy Garden and Interiors. I love the simple design of the site and again, the beautiful styling of the products (always a stylist at heart!)
Above, a hand painted Tiffin Tin - "the word tiffin comes from the British Indian word meaning light lunch. In Mumbai the word mostly referred to the packed lunches prepared for working Indian men by their wives" - they carried them in tins similar to these.

100% Linen tea towels, hand printed in England.

A porcelain butter dish.

Next Christmas I'm going to get some of this Woven 'Pixie' Ribbon to tie around my pressies- so sweet.

Orange Blossom and Sandalwood Bath soap- aren't the tags and ribbons charming?

I love vintage finds and these rescued OXO tins have been "up-cyled" into clocks. Perfect for that retro inspired kitchen.
Another little glimpse at another creative company - check them out Dee Puddy Garden and Interiors.

Plate Passsion....as seen in House Beautiful

I just was looking through my portfolio of the work I'd done throughout my editorial career in New York. I was in the game there for over 15 years and just loved it. Just out of college, I started as an assistant, and was paid something like $50 a day. And I fell in love with it all and flourished and grew and climbed the editorial ladder. I worked primarily in home or women's interest magazines spending many years at Hearst Magazines and a few at Hachette Filipacchi Media.

My last job before we moved to Ireland in July 2007 was working as Senior Editor at House Beautiful magazine. And the last piece I produced for them was this fantastic fun piece - 101 Plates. The 101 concept was brought to the magazine by the new editor-in-chief when he came on board and it was very effective.

Of course, I'm obsessed with plates anyway... my mother designs them. I did my Senior Thesis in college on majolica -I used to sell my mother's plates at trade shows - I kind of know a thing or two about them. And looking through this piece again was so much fun and it reminds me about why I'm so passionate about creative and artistic people.

So, it's given me great inspiration to get me ready for gathering all the Irish talent for my "Love Irish Crafts" campaign!

This piece was featured in the May 2007 issue of House Beautiful and photographed by David Turner...produced by yours truly.

Nenagh Arts Centre and Nenagh Winter Wonderland

Last night I attended a celebration of Nenagh's Winter Wonderland in the Nenagh Arts Centre. I'd been there before for a production last year but this time I had more time to look around and take in the beautiful transition of this building.
Built as the Town Hall in 1889, it was erected on the site of the "old turf market design of R.P. Gill." In the autumn of 2010, the year long renovation was completed and the centre now offers a fantastic venue for the people of Nenagh and surrounding towns.

Do stop in and pick up their brochure for upcoming events - in March the Nenagh Choral Society will present Hot Mikado. There are films and music - on 5th March the Ormond Octaves will perform a Concert of Light in aid of Suaimhneas, Nenagh's Cancer Support. On Friday nights, you can go to Bingo. For more information and upcoming events or to book tickets check out their website - http://www.nenagharts.com/

Back to Nenagh Winter Wonderland - this was a wonderful idea pulled together by several key people in the town including Deirdre Ryan, of Creative Business Promotions and Marney O'Regan from the Bank of Ireland. It was a collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Council - an idea to bring people to Nenagh for Christmas shopping. But their were many vital contributors to this project including a group of volunteer painters, the local schools got involved as well creating artwork for the Santa's Grotto in Quintin's Way and the charity workers from Enable who ran the Santa's Grotto. It was part funded by North Tipperary Leader Partnership.

Up to 70 Shops in the town got involved an I unfortunatly only got a few photos myself - these of Finnerty's Pharmacy windows on Kenyon Street but last night there was a beautiful presentation with images by Tom Doherty.

The reason I'm highlighting all this is that I was so impressed by the way the town came together to push themselves through these difficult economic times and "think outside the box" to help drive business to the town and keep it thriving.
Nenagh is my kind of town. Looking forward to what the future holds.

Blodwen: More Welsh Goodies

I seem to have found loads of lovely Welsh goodies lately, my latest find - Blodwen. Check out their website. Again the styling is beautiful and they sell only products made locally in Wales. Their tag line...."Modern Welsh Tradition From Cardigan Bay." I love this cupboard don't' you? Makes me want to go all white in my kitchen...well, not really but it would make a beautiful feature piece.

A delightful knitting bag - I've always been a sucker for ticking.

Lovely textiles.

Interesting enamelware.

Yummy honey - in a lovely jar with great packaging.

A rocking sheep for the kiddies.

And beautiful handmade baskets.
Blodwen's philosophy is "back to basics - back to nature, making and mending, foraging and finding."
Such a great philosophy in a recession and so in vogue right now.
Be sure to check out their site - Blodwen.
